LET'S WRAP IT UP...OR NOT?

After over 1000 Slow Market Saturdays, spanning over 11 years, we are taking a brief respite during the winter period in order to attend to upgrading, renovation and branding commitments. This will mean that the market will close directly after the ringing of the old historic Oude Libertas bell at 14h:00 on the 15th of June 2019, reflecting back to the same period in which Stellenbosch was founded and named after Dutch settler, Simon van der Stel. What better way to celebrate winter than with our very own Cape heritage?

Thereafter the market renovations will begin before reopening with our first #Springmarket on the 31st of August 2019. We gladly invite all from near and far to attend, visit, shop and enjoy! Join us at Oude Libertas in Stellenbosch from 9am for great food, live music, handmade art & creative fashion experiences. See you there!

While we're talking about the best way to "Wrap" things up for the winter, we really thought it would be useful to also begin an important conversation about packaging. We feel it is time to get our own supermarket chains to speed up change.

In other parts of the world one can clearly see the growing shift in consciousness when it comes to the war on plastic. Corporations and big business in general are increasingly being held accountable for their profitability at the expense of the environment.

In New Zealand, buying "food in the nude" has become common practice, an excellent example to the rest of world of what we should really be focusing on.

We love the idea of bringing your own Tupperware along to the supermarket and we get excited when we envision a South Africa without plastic. This video below illustrates what we are getting at so well!

We also realise that change will only come if we keep stirring things up, and we love that many of you, our faithful readers, also feel the same way. We are taking stock of how we approach #Sustainability, and will be using the winter months ahead to remodel and make things over the "Slow" way.

We would love to challenge you to take up the message and actively engage with our very own corporate giants on getting serious and smart about how we deal with our plastic problems.
